Transfrontier conference in the frame of the project ‘Breaking the borders: nature discovery trails to Eastern Carpathians’

The Transfrontier Conference was held on 25-26 of April, 2014, in Yaremche. The Conference theme was “Eco- and nature-based tourism: fostering cooperation between nature protection establishments, tourism business and local communities”. The event was attended 236 persons. This event attracted high amount of attention from the target audiences, mostly representing small local businesses, nature protection areas and local governments.

The Conference purposely was organized at the project finalizing stage in order to present and discuss its results and confirm the further plan for joint actions. This event also became an excellent opportunity for the promotion of the key project results – the Nature Based Tourism Strategy for the Eastern Carpathians, infrastructure elements for improving access of the visitors, Project documentations for future projects.
Among the conference participants there were representatives of the nature protection institutions almost from all regions of Ukraine, activists of public organizations, tourism services’ providers, owners of B&B homesteads, representatives of the local and state authorities, representatives of various state institutions working in the tourism and nature tourism areas etc.
The program of the conference included plenary sessions, parallel theme sessions and round tables. The themes of the sections were: 1) Nature protection areas and tourism sector: opportunities for cooperation; in the session representatives officials from National Parks: Carpathian Nature, Verkhovyna, Cheremosky, Kremenetski Mountains, Tuzlovski Lymany, Zacharovanyi Krai, Uzhansky took part; 2) Modern trends in the area of active tourism and sustainable rural development; this session included presentations about cooperation in the tourism sphere among the different participants of the market, environmental education and modern trend of the tourism activities in the world; 3) Practical projects in eco-tourism and sustainable development; in this session participants presented different projects related to the nature tourism.
At the Conference representative of the Beneficiary (I. Zinoviev) presented the results achieved in the frame of the Project. During one of the section there was presentation about Carpathian National Nature Park (Partner 2), given by Oleksandr Kyselyuk, deputy Project director on environment/scientific issues. Oksana Fedorovych, head of Tourist Association of Ivano-Frankivsk Region (Partner 4), presented the theme “Fostering niche tourism: en example of the “Carpathian Culinary Heritage Network”.
In total, 16 presentations were given at the Conference, each lasted about 20 minutes. Also, two round tables were held, one dedicated to the potential of nature protection areas in the field of ecotourism, and the other one to the need of policy changes on a national, regional and local levels.
From the Beneficiary’s point of view, the Transfrontier Conference helped to strengthen and to promote the role of nature tourism for the communities’ sustainable development. The Conference provided a dialog for discussions of nature tourism principles and positive experience. It became the specific platform for the development of interregional partnership in nature tourism on the Ukrainian and international levels. The Conference has started a tradition to exchange the ideas and proposals between the organizations and professionals in this sector and played a tramline role for experience exchange in nature tourism. The event also assisted in generating of new ideas concerning the future joint projects in the nature tourism development.
